California – Calistoga: Sterling Vineyards – Aerial Tramway


Sterling Vineyards, at 1111 Dunaweal Lane, was founded in 1964 when British international paper broker and former London Times Financial Times writer, Peter Newton’s Sterling International bought a 50-acre parcel of vineyard bordering Calistoga. Newton planted Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and the region’s first significant Merlot at a time most vineyards were focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1969, they released the first vintages, including the first vintage-dated Merlot in California.

The Mediterranean-style white stucco winery complex, perched 300 feet above the town of Calistoga, was designed by Martin Waterfield from 1971-1972. Set against the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges that flank each side of Napa Valley, the design was inspired by the Greek island of Mykonos, where Newton once lived, and and incorporates bells from St. Dunstans’s in London, England, a church destroyed in World War II. The Visitor’s Center, accessible by an aerial tramway carrying guests from the parking lot to the top of the knoll, opened in 1973.

The Coca Cola Company bought the winery in 1977, in a short-lived attempt to enter the wine market. In 1979, the Rutherford vineyards and the world-famous Diamond Mountain Ranch Vineyard were acquired. Joseph E. Seagram and Sons bought the winery in 1982, and increased quality as well as boosting production from 60,000 cases to nearly 400,000. In late 2001, Seagrams was purchased by Diageo. Today, Sterling owns and farms 1200 acres of vineyards throughout the Napa Valley.

Despicable Me 2 is an upcoming 2013 American 3D computer animated comedy film and the sequel to the 2010 animated film Despicable Me. Produced by Illumination Entertainment and distributed by Universal Pictures, it will be directed again by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, and written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Miranda Cosgrove and Kristen Wiig will reprise their roles. New cast members include Al Pacino as Gru’s nemesis, and Steve Coogan in a yet unnamed role. The film is scheduled to be released on July 3, 2013.

The Winery: After decades of researching and studying medieval castles throughout Europe, Dario Sattui began his marathon building project in 1993.

The 121,000 square foot Castello includes, 107 unique rooms, 8,000 tons of hand-squared stones, 8 levels (4 below ground), 900 feet of caves, a completely hand-painted Great Hall, a drawbridge, moat, dungeon and torture chamber, a consecrated chapel, one of the most impressive wine barrel rooms in the U.S. constructed with ancient brick Roman cross-vaulted ceilings.

Yet, the Castle is merely a backdrop to showcase some of Napa Valley’s best wines. The castle produces a tiny 15,000 cases which are sold only at the winery; directly to the customer.

The Vineyards and Wines: Castello di Amorosa has 30 acres of vineyards surrounding its great, hand-chiseled walls, gates, and guard towers, planted with Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which produce low yields and intensely flavored wines. The Castle produces hand-crafted Italian style wines including Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco and a Super Tuscan Blend all made to pair beautifully with food.
